Ruben Xaus (Castrol Honda) used a window of opportunity to post the fastest lap of the morning session at Portimao, his 1'47.065 only approached by one other rider who made it around the circuit before a light fall of rain slowed the times again.
Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare) was second, 1.2 seconds back, but the rest were well behind, having been out in very different conditions. Marco Melandri was third on his Yamaha World Superbike Team machine, but over seven seconds behind Xaus.
