An early crash at Turn 2, luckily without any consequences, failed to prevent Carlos Checa (Ducati Althea Racing) from setting the quickest time in the first free practice session at Phillip Island. The Spaniard was six-tenths quicker than Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) who appears to be suffering no ill effects from his crash on the second day of testing here on Tuesday.
An impressive third was Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing) who is rapidly proving to be right on the pace together with his ZX-10R machine, in his first year of World Superbike. Behind the Spaniard can be found Leon Haslam who made a late charge up the field on his BMW. Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) is in sixth, just behind Sylvain Guintoli on the Effenbert - Liberty Racing Ducati. Marco Melandri's first official session on the Yamaha YZF-R1 was a positive one with the Italian setting the eighth quickest time ahead of Michale Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare) and team-mate Eugene Laverty.
