Czech Republic rider Jakub Smrz (Effenbert-Liberty Racing Ducati) got the edge over Althea Racing Ducati's man Carlos Checa by just 40/1000ths of a second in the first free practice session at Assen.
Behind the two Ducati 1098R machines can be found 2010 double winner Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda), with Noriyuki Haga (Pata Racing Team Aprilia) and Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) next up.


World champion Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team) currently lies in seventh place, two positions ahead of his compatriot Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team).
