Championship leader Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) moved to the head of the field in the first session of free practice at the Nurburgring this morning. Checa's time of 1 minute 57.296 seconds was set on a drying track after some early morning rain.
The Spaniard was just a fraction ahead of his fellow countryman Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing Team), while Jakub Smrz (Effenbert - Liberty Racing Ducati) and Michel Fabrizio (Alstare Suzuki) took the next two spots.


Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team) was eighth quickest, with Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team) taking the eleventh slot.
