The Kawasaki man, who was also on pole for the race here last year, set a quickest time of 1 minute 47.799 seconds, almost four-tenths of a second under the record set last year by Carlos Checa. Behind Sykes can be found his fellow Brit, Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda), who was fastest yesterday, and Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare), who won here in 2009. Championship leader Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) was fourth, followed by Noriyuki Haga (Pata Racing Team Aprilia) and Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport), while Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike team) could only manage seventh place.
